Why You Should Watch Sense8

Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! I haven’t talked about films and series for so long so I thought, why not make one today? Okay, I’m very much attached to this show so I will do my best to put all the reasons why you should watch Sense8.

Sense 8 is a group of people around the world are suddenly linked mentally, and must find a way to survive being hunted by those who see them as a threat to the world’s order. Directed and created by:  J. Michael StraczynskiLana WachowskiLilly Wachowski. Source:

Now, I’ll do the best I can to describe everything about Sense 8. As you can read in the IMDB description, the sensates are group of people around the world who are suddenly connected and can telepathically experience each other’s lives. The 8 main characters are very diverse and are from different countries: Chicago, San Francisco, Iceland, India, Korea, Berlin, Mexico and Nairobi. When they became connected, they knew that they weren’t normal homo sapiens and that they belonged to “homo sensoriums” which were experimented by the BPO (Biologic Preservation Organization) for a long period of time. Each of the sensates has their own different skills to protect their own kind from the BPO.

The Plot

The plot of Sense 8 is incredibly amazing. As I have said earlier, 8 different people from different cultures and countries are suddenly linked telepathically. They experience each other’s lives thus they form and tackle so much about empathy. Each sensate also has their different skills and when one of their cluster is in trouble, they could help one another. At first, I was so confused with everything that has been going on but I just kept on watching. And then I think at episode 3, I finally understood what was going on.

The Characters

I’d love to talk so much about this. I really want this post to be spoiler-free but I will add one of my favorite quotes from each character.

Nomi Marks

Nomi Marks is from San Francisco. She is a professional hacker. She is also a transgender and because she has a Christian family, her family does not support her. I super love Nomi’s story because it tackles so much about acceptance and I admire her relationship with one of the best side characters, Amanita. Nomi’s story just shows how the creators of the show care for the members of the LGBT community.

Lito Rodriguez

Lito is from Mexico City. He is a well-known and loved actor in Mexico because of his action movies. Lito lives with his boyfriend, Hernando. But since he is a famous actor, he hid his sexual orientation from the world and made it a secret. I super admire Lito’s character because he is actually super funny and he’s like a small bean whom you need to protect.

Will Gorski

Will Gorski is from Chicago. He is a cop trying to live up to his father’s reputation. He is also one of the characters who first understood everything about “homo sensorium” because of his connection with a sensate outside his cluster, Jonas Maliki. Whilst there’s no leader in his cluster, I admire his leadership and planning skills.

Riley Blue

Riley is from Iceland but moved in London. She is a professional and well-known DJ. Music is in her blood and veins because of her parents. Whilst every sensate has interesting back stories, I loved Riley’s story the most. She lost courage and when she met the other sensates, that’s when she started to develop it again.

Kala Dandekar

Kala is from Mumbai, India. She’s a scientist by profession and she’s actually very smart and family-oriented. Due to her trying to live up to her family’s expectations and her engagement to Rajan who has a secular family, she develops struggles. I love Kala so much and it’s always so fun to see her in the scenes.

Wolfgang Bogdanow

Wolfgang is from Berlin, Germany. He doesn’t actually have a profession because he is a good thief. He opens safes very well that’s why probably in his whole life, he was in danger. Like Riley, I like Wolfgang’s back story. He may seem like a tough man who doesn’t need help from anyone, but throughout the show you will see that he cares so much for the other sensates and his best friend considered brother, Felix.

Sun Bak

Sun is from Seoul, Korea. Because she is a girl, she wasn’t accepted by her father and favors her brother most of the time. She is angry and very lonely and she express it all through martial arts. Geez, she really is a good fighter and even though she has repressed anger, she tend to stay calm all the time. I really love Sun’s character too and I just enjoy it every time she’s on a scene fighting.

Capheus Onyango

Capheus is from Nairobi, Kenya. He is a driver and he likes Van Damme so much that he called his bus Van Damn. He cares so much for his sick mother and does everything to protect her and provide her medicinal needs. Capheus’ story showed me a whole other perspective on life and I just really admire his character. He always tell, “I’ve got a feeling that today would be a very good day.” He is so positive despite everything that is happening to him.

I love every character so much and gosh, you should just watch it so you would know what I’m saying. Each of them has their own story and it’s so good that the show didn’t rush each of their individual stories because if you think about it, 8 individual characters and then their story as a whole. It’s just so good how they showed each of the character’s developments. The actors are really good too.

The Creation

I have also watched “Sense 8: Creating the World” which is a documentary on how they created the show. In the documentary, they mentioned that they filmed in nine different locations. The producers of the show didn’t just want to use a green screen so they shoot it exactly where it’s meant to be. They also hired local crews and actors to make it more realistic because again and again, the sensates are 8 different people from different countries and culture.

Sense 8 also shoot often in a real crowd. The pride scenes were shot exactly where there is a pride march. Tuppence Middleton, the actor who plays Riley, performed actual sets in KOKO which without the audience realizing she wasn’t a real DJ and that she was acting. Aml Ameen, the actor who plays Capheus, was pulled over once by the police because he was driving so much around Nairobi. Because of this, the show is very realistic and kudos to all of their team because as one of them said, shooting in a real crowd is not an easy thing to do.

In the documentary, they also said that they shoot their scenes in one country all at once, before moving to another country to start over. They were all together for 4 months travelling and shooting, which made the actors really close altogether. Tuppence also said in the documentary that if it weren’t for Sense8, they probably wouldn’t have met each other. It’s so crazy how the cast is so diverse which is a really good point for the show.

The cast grew extremely close. Bae Doona, the actor who plays Sun, said that she toured them to Seoul and Max Riemelt, the actor who plays Wolfgang, said that he really had an unforgettable Seoul tour that he wants to make it memorable for the other casts when he toured them to Berlin.

Lana and Andy Wachowski.

Also, kudos to the show’s creators for making a masterpiece like this. It wouldn’t have been possible without them.

Sense8 serie finale

Sense8 tackles a lot of different social issues and it will open your mind every time. Because of Sense8, I have learned a lot about philosophical aspects that you really can’t take away in one’s lives. Issues about politics, religion, and sexual orientation are also present in Sense8. I have honestly learned a lot from this show.

As I’ve been saying again and again, Sense8 talks so much about empathy, acceptance and love. I am also rarely hooked up on series so Sense8 is a pretty big deal for me. Also, when you watch this, you’ll never hear “What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes” the same ever again.

If you’re looking for a good series to watch, I really recommend Sense8. I have been recommending this to everyone I know because the world needs to know Sense8. I’m just so sad that Netflix cancelled it especially know that I knew that there’s already a season 3 written.

This show just changed some of my life’s perspectives. As a philosophy major, this show is a win-win for me. Lol. Again, if you’re looking for a series to watch, please watch this and help us #RenewSense8!

Thank you so much for reading. Let’s chat in the comments!

  1. Beautiful review!
I absolutely loved this series, too. (I rarely watch Netflix.)

Indeed, it’s difficult to choose one favorite character as all of them are really beautiful and together, they are as powerful as Gods.
