Hello everyone and welcome back to another Blogger’s Guide post! Last May, I have decided to finally go self-hosted and if you’re interested to read about my self-hosting experience, you can check out My Self Hosting Process. For today’s post, I will be telling the benefits of self-hosting so if you’re still confused whether to self-host or not, then this post might help you!
Benefits of Self-Hosting
First, what is self-hosting?
Self-hosting, in the simplest terms, is when you have access to all of your website files and the server where those files are stored. You own those files and ultimately have the freedom to change them anytime you want. You also get to decide how your site is built, from the ground and up.Here’s a really good analogy: self-hosting is like owning your own home instead of renting an apartment. When you have your own home, you are responsible for everything and everything you have is your own but when renting an apartment, you’re kind of restricted and you don’t own the structure but you may own the content. The same goes for self-hosting and sticking with free hosting sites. Source: https://www.janefriedman.com/website-self-hosting
So if you want to own all of your content, customize your own site with no restrictions at all, add plugins to improve your site, then you should go try self-hosting! However, there are also disadvantages in self-hosting like when your site goes down, it will be your problem to solve and you are also responsible for the site backups- except when you include backup for your hosting plan. – Originally posted in: Writings by JM: Why I Chose Hostinger As My Web-Hosting Provider | My Total Costs
Now, let’s me share the benefits you can have when you go self-hosted.
1. You have more freedom for your site and you take control. You do you.
While your content is YOUR OWN when using WordPress.com free plan or other blogging platforms free plan, you have limited choices and control over your site. They can also take your site down with or without notice or cause which would definitely feel terrible for a blogger. Going self-hosted means you could really do anything that you like with no restrictions at all.
2. You can customize your site.
This is pretty much a continuation of no. 1 but as I have said so many times already, you can customize your site freely. When I was using a WordPress free plan, I couldn’t really install themes that I like and I couldn’t add codes in my site. Now that I am self-hosted, I am so satisfied with how my site turned out. One of the best feelings ever when migrating to a self-hosted site is the customization. It’s so fun and so free!
3. You can add plugins.
As of now, I really do have a lot of plugins installed. One of the most important plugins is of course, Jetpack, so even though I am not hosted in WordPress, I am still connected to WordPress and you all can still see my site in WordPress Reader. Most of the plugins I have are for free!
4. It is more professional.
I have experienced not being accepted to brands or companies that I apply to because I don’t have my own domain. Whilst you can purchase your own domain in WordPress.com, going self-hosted offers a lot more opportunities. If you decide to go self-hosted, Hostinger has a lot of plans you can choose from + they have a lot of freebies like Free SSL Certificate!
5. You can monetize your site.
Yes, one of the benefits of self-hosting is because your site is more professional with its own domain and probably with your site customization, you can now monetize your blog! When I finished setting up my blog, I immediately applied to affiliate marketing sites and Google Adsense. It took me a lot of time before I got accepted to Adsense. If you see ads in my site, it’s because I finally got accepted and it’s one way for me to earn a little income. The income is little, but one has got to start!
Having a self-hosted blog is fun and pretty amazing. I even set up a shop in my site for my digital artworks so if you’re looking for art prints to hang in your wall, check out my shop! If you are a beauty blogger or a blogger who does reviews of products and if you’re consistent with your content, brands will most likely reach out to you or accept you immediately when you have a self-hosted blog.
These are the benefits of self-hosting! If you’re looking for a cheap but fast web-hosting provider, check out Hostinger! Fun fact, I got self hosted for a total of 2,294 Php (or $45.20) in Hostinger! Check out this post to know my self-hosting process and my total costs.
